About Us

Maharashtra Association of Pesticide Poisoned Persons (MAPPP) is a state-wide platform of farmers and farm workers established with the objective of securing justice and find sustainable solutions to the problems being faced by them. MAPPP was initiated in Yavatmal following the unfortunate incidents of pesticide poisoning of farmers and farm workers by inhalation and contact exposure while spraying pesticides in 2017.

MAPPP is a collective of pesticide poisoned victims, kin of those who died, farmers, workers and supporters in Maharashtra. MAPPP was formed in Yavatmal district in 2018. Yavatmal is one of the areas where Maharashtra Association of Pesticide Poisoned Persons is started. However, MAPPP will spread across Maharashtra and work in areas where pesticide poisoning problems are intense and where PPPs require justice and relief. MAPPP will work towards overall development of PPPs and their families on issues ranging from justice, agriculture, safe water, education, etc. Our objective is to mobilise PPPs on different pesticide related issues affecting them and deliberate on how to resolve such issues by engaging with the government and other pillars of democracy.

MAPPP is committed to securing justice for victims of pesticide poisoning and ensuring accountability for agrochemical companies. MAPPP undertakes collective action with communities, civil societies, government and international institutions to prevent, harmful impact of pesticides and agrochemical usage, among other things. Its activities include increasing awareness, education, economic relief and action against toxic agrochemicals, through united efforts.

MAPPP is governed by a 15 member steering committee which includes survived victims of inhalational/contact pesticide poisonings, kin of victims who have deceased, organic farmers and supporters. Further MAPPP is advised by six member advisory committee which includes expertise from various fields such lawyers, public policy experts, health professionals, agriculture experts, and journalists.


VISION

Maharashtra Association of Pesticide Poisoned Persons is a community-based secular, non-affiliated advocacy organization that works towards securing the rights of pesticide-poisoned persons (PPP) in Maharashtra.


MISSION

Strengthen the capacity of the PPP and their groups in accessing justice, compensation, health services, clean water, food, transport and other basic necessities of life.

Participate in advocacy, legal and policy actions, through cooperation and support from government and non-governmental organizations.

To mobilize public awareness on development and governance issues faced by PPPs for the betterment of their living conditions and sustainable livelihoods.

To advocate for positive action, with regard to agroecology and regulation of pesticides, by highlighting the social, economic and public health problems arising out of pesticide usage.

To seek judicial intervention wherever necessary to achieve the above objectives in public interest


FUNCTION

Non Negotiable Principles

Members of this platform should abide by the following principles, which are non-negotiable:

  • Should work independent of their political affiliations.
  • Should not choose this as a via media for their political affiliations/publicity.
  • The work done will be for the betterment of the PPPs without any interference from any political parties.
  • Should attend member meetings and represent issues of PPPs before government and other pillars of democracy.
  • Regular interaction with volunteers and public for information on pesticide poisoning issues and liaison with government officials of concerned departments to address/seek resolution.
  • All decisions will be taken through transparent and democratic methods.
  • There will be no discrimination against any individual or group within MAPPP on the basis of religion, caste or gender.
  • All activities including protests if any shall be based on democratic and non-violent principles.
  • Activities should be prioritized on the basis of reaching out to most disadvantaged/poor sections among the pesticide poisoned persons and families in Maharashtra.
